Julian Nagelsmann refuses to rule out signing Lewandowski replacement
Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann refuses to rule out signing replacement striker for Robert Lewandowski before the new season begins – with Sadio Mane set to lead the line in Saturday’s Supercup final against Leipzig
- Julian Nagelsmann has said Bayern may still sign a striker before the new season
- The Bayern manager saw Robert Lewandowski leave for Barcelona this summer
- He suggested Sadio Mane and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting could fill in up front
Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has admitted his side may still sign a striker to replace Robert Lewandowski ahead of the new season.
The Polish hotshot, 33, scored an astonishing 50 goals last season in all competitions, with 344 in 375 games in eight seasons at the German side, but joined Barcelona this summer after insisting he wanted to leave.
Bayern have signed Liverpool forward Sadio Mane in a £35million deal and have veteran Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting as a striking option too, but coach Nagelsmann refused to rule out getting someone else in to shoulder the goalscoring burden.

Nagelsmann said Sadio Mane and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting could fill in up front if needed
He said: ‘We had discussed all those possibilities beforehand. We had discussed the Lewandowski situation and played out the different scenarios. It’s not that we are now sitting here all disappointed that we did not find a one-on-one replacement.
‘There are still four weeks that the transfer window is open so something could still happen. We are keeping our eyes on the market.’
The departure of Lewandowski, who was named FIFA Best Men’s Player for the second straight year in January, leaves a gaping hole in the German club’s attack.
Bayern, who won their 10th league title in a row last campaign, have had a busy summer of ins and outs, signing Juventus centre half Matthijs de Ligt, Ajax pair Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch, plus Mane and French teen Mathys Tel.

Senegalese star Mane – traditionally a left winger – scored 23 goals in his final season at Liverpool, many of which were while he played up front. He also played the Champions League final against Real Madrid in that position.
‘Sadio can score a lot of goals. He has shown that. Choupo-Moting is a very good striker so there are options. It is not that we did not factor in the possibility that the number nine will not be there,’ Nagelsmann added.
‘When we agreed to Barcelona’s offer (for Lewandowski) we had calculated that there was the possibility that no one would be brought in for this position.’
Bayern begin their season against German Cup winners RB Leipzig in Saturday’s German Supercup as they compete for the first trophy of the season, a week before the Bundesliga starts on Friday August 5.
