Jota leaves Gomez in agony after hoofing ball at him in Liverpool training
Diogo Jota can hit more than just the back of the net. Ask Joe Gomez.
The Liverpool forward is in remarkable form of late, having scored six goals in his last four games in all competitions including a hat-trick at Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Jota's form has led to many people calling for Jurgen Klopp to start him over Roberto Firmino in Sunday's trip to Manchester City, a move that would be seen as hugely symbolic given the status of Liverpool's front three over the past three seasons.
And the former Wolves man certainly looked to be keen to impress at a Melwood training session on Thursday.
A little too keen perhaps.
As Liverpool's players conducted a fast-paced rondo, Andy Robertson excitedly passes the ball through both Gomez and James Milner to Jota, who then absolutely hoofs it… straight into Gomez's nether regions.
The defender crumples to the floor and doesn't receive too much sympathy from his laughing teammates including a giggling Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane, before he eventually gets to his feet and checks to see if everything is still in working order.
Jota is looking a little sheepish a he goes over to the centre-back, but thankfully any serious injury was avoided.
One man who is in no doubt that Jota should start over Firmino at City is the Arsenal legend Ian Wright.
"Yeah, I would [start Jota]," Wright told Premier League Productions .
"Bobby Firmino’s form in terms of goalscoring is something Liverpool need to address.
"He needs to get all three of them doing it and at the moment all three of them can do it. I’d probably play him, yeah.
"When they signed Jota, it didn’t make you think 'What are they getting him for?'
"You just went, 'Ah, I get that. I can see that'.
"Watching him the last three games, you can see he’s someone who is going to really, really kick on there. He’s going to really kick on."
Which one would you pick? Have your say here.
