Jose Mourinho reacts to Tottenham facing Man Utd or Man City in Carabao Cup final

Tottenham beat Championship side Brentford 2-0 to reach the Carabao Cup final thanks to goals from Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-min. The north Londoners will face either Manchester United or Manchester City in the Wembley showpiece event.

However, Mourinho does not want to think about that match because it has been rescheduled for April 25, rather that it’s usual February date.

“The next match is always a match we want to try to win but now we have this final in the pocket for three months,” Mourinho said. “We are going to wait for the final.

“Normally we play in February I guess. Now we have three months waiting for this final so we have to forget it.

“We have to focus on what we have – we have FA Cup to play, Premier League, Europa League even before the final so let’s forget it. It’s a final we have in the and when the 20-something of April arrives we have to be ready to go there and fight for the trophy.”

Tottenham has not secured any silverware since they won the League Cup with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in 2008.

The failure to bring any trophies to White Hart Lane was one of the only blemishes on ex-boss Mauricio Pochettino’s record.

However, Mourinho is a serial winner having and has won the League Cup on three occasions with Chelsea and once with United.

The Portuguese boss also acknowledges what it will mean to the supporters to see their side lifting a trophy.

“I came to England 2004 and I remember in that period I had to learn the meaning of the cups here and I always took it seriously,” he added.

“If there is any secret it’s to always take it seriously and respect the teams with smaller quality and go with ambition.

“What I sense in the team is that winning mentality. The guys took it seriously. If you see the winners, you see that the big clubs want to win it.

“Who was the last winner outside of the normal top six? The big clubs care about it. When April arrives we have to be ready and to fight for the trophy.”

Meanwhile, semi-final goalscorer Sissoko said: “It’s been a long time we are waiting for that moment. We are going to go to Wembley to play United or City, and we have to be ready.

Tottenham: Mourinho slams players for COVID breach

“The last final we reached was the Champions League final and we lost, so we were disappointed for many months.

“You don’t only play a final. You have to win it, and hopefully we can bring the trophy home. We are in the final so it’s the time to win it.”
