Jose Mourinho’s move to Roma, just 15 days after being sacked by Tottenham, took the footballing world by surprise. But now the Portuguese manager has been confirmed as the Italian club’s boss for the 2021/22 season thoughts are turning to the summer transfer window.

Mourinho will take over from Paulo Fonseca at the end of the season on a three-year contract, allowing him plenty of time to shape his squad ahead of the new campaign.

Having managed Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Tottenham, Mourinho has influence right across Europe.

He will be very familiar to three players in the Italian capital, with Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan having worked under him at United and Pedro at Chelsea.

While he might not have wanted to be reunited with the trio, having endured difficult relationships with Smalling and Mkhitaryan in particular, the 58-year-old may reach out to his former clubs this summer.

Mourinho has already been linked with moves for Spurs pair Eric Dier and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the Italian media and now there are some other names in the frame.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport have assessed his options, reporting that a different Tottenham player could be of interest.

They report that Carlos Vinicius, who is currently on loan at Spurs from Benfica, is one of three names who ‘are to be followed’ ahead of the summer transfer window.

Vinicius has scored 10 goals in 22 appearances for Spurs so far this season, providing back-up to Harry Kane up front.

Although the 26-year-old is contracted to Benfica until June 2024, having signed a five-year deal with the Portuguese club in 2019, Spurs reportedly have the option to sign him permanently for £38.2million this summer.

Mourinho used him sparingly when in charge of Spurs, but Vinicius did impress on occasions, scoring a hat-trick against Marine in the FA Cup and six times in nine Europa League appearances.

According to the report, another former club Mourinho could raid is Real Madrid, with midfielder Isco also on his radar.

The 29-year-old has one year left to run on his current Real contract and has frequently been linked with moves to the Premier League in recent seasons.

He has been a fringe player for Zinedine Zidane this season, starting in just nine of his 26 appearances and could be looking for a new club at the end of the season, with Los Blancos aiming to rebuild their ageing squad.

The final name on Mourinho’s list is winger Anwar El Ghazi, who has scored nine goals in 26 appearances for Aston Villa this season.

The 26-year-old has netted in each of Villa’s last two games and his agent, Jorge Mendes, is reportedly keen to move him on this summer.

Roma are likely to be active in the transfer market, with the side currently seventh in Serie A and facing defeat in the Europa League semi-final tonight, having lost the first leg 6-2 to Manchester United.
