Jamie Redknapp tells Timo Werner to send message to Liverpool after Chelsea deal
Timo Werner must make Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp regret missing out on his signature when he finalises his move Chelsea. That’s according to former Red Jamie Redknapp.
The 24-year-old Leipzig striker has made no secret of his admiration for Liverpool in recent months and described the Merseyside giants as ‘the best team in the world’ after his impressive performance away to Tottenham in the Champions League back in February.
Klopp even held a virtual meeting with Werner during the lockdown to discuss a potential move for his fellow countryman ahead of the summer transfer window but Chelsea have jumped to the front of the queue for the Germany international.
Widespread reports in Germany and England claim the Blues have agreed a deal in principle with Werner after offering the forward wages of £200,000-a-week to make him one of the highest paid players in the club’s history.
Reacting to the rumours, ex-Liverpool midfielder Redknapp told football.london: ‘It’s a great signing.
‘They have got [Hakim] Ziyech as well and he looks like a really good signing as well. Frank is building a really good, young side.
‘Tammy [Abraham] has done well up front, but he can play in any of the three front positions. I think it just shows that they are doing good things at Chelsea. Frank has done a great job, especially if they get top four.
‘If the deal is done without knowing that Chelsea are going to be in the Champions League, then it shows you that he was very impressed with what Frank and Chelsea are doing right now.
‘He will probably look at that Chelsea front line, with Willian and Pedro out of contract this summer, and think that he can be a regular in that team.’
According to Redknapp, it will only become clear whether Liverpool will regret not signing Werner when the German takes to the field in a Chelsea shirt.
‘Meanwhile at Liverpool, who is going to replace. He’s a really good player, but we don’t know right now, is he better than [Sadio] Mane, [Roberto] Firmino, [Mohamed] Salah?’ Redknapp added.
‘It’s one of the best front three in the world right now so he doesn’t want to go somewhere and be a number two or a sub.
‘Will they regret it? You don’t know but that is what he has got to do.
‘He has got to make Liverpool regret that decision, or at least make them think, “I wish we had signed him!”
‘For Liverpool they have got to look it and think, if you bring someone like him in it could upset the balance of them and maybe they might think, “Would it be worth the risk to bring in another player?”
‘They have three top class players who don’t get many injuries, why risk upsetting balance.’
