Jamie Carragher’s verdict on Steven Gerrard replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on Steven Gerrard taking over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

The Reds boss suffered a tough night as his side suffered their first Premier League defeat in 12 games, losing 1-0 to Southampton.

Former midfielder Gerrard, though, is continuing to enjoy a sensational third season as Rangers manager after beating rivals Celtic 1-0 to maintain their unbeaten Scottish Premiership run.

It has seen the 40-year-old get linked with Klopp’s job once the German has finished at Anfield.

But Carragher, who spent 17 seasons with the Englishman at Liverpool, believes that more time is needed before brining Gerrard to the club.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of kick-off at St Mary’s, Carragher said: “I actually admire Frank for the job he did last year and what's happening now, I love his interview after the game.

“But I look at managers now – Frank being one, going into a top job on the back of 12 months at Derby. The experience isn't there.

“He hasn't got the job on the fact of being a great manager – he's got the job on the fact of 'Chelsea – Frank Lampard'.

“Gary [Neville] went to Valencia. Big job, how could you say no? How could Frank say no? But they don't have that experience to fall back on.

“Thierry Henry goes to Monaco, hasn't got that experience to fall back on. They haven't learned the ups and downs of managing and coaching.

"Stevie Gerrard's another one who's gone to Rangers – doing really well. Looks like he'll win the title this season.

“Would I want Steven Gerrard to be the Liverpool manager without more experience? Possibly not.

“Because I just think when you get those really big jobs and you haven't got that experience you've got nothing to fall back on when times are tough as they will be for the next few weeks for Frank.

"Players of my generation, certainly me, I don't want to go down to the lower leagues and learn about coaching."

It comes as other pundits have warned Gerrard off taking over from Klopp at Anfield.
