Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana has been snapped wearing an Arsenal shirt during his summer break – but insists the photo only surfaced after he was ‘tricked’ by friends following a match.

Fofana caught the eye at the heart of the Foxes’ backline during his first season in England after joining for £36million from Saint Etienne, and has unsurprisingly been linked to a host of Europe’s biggest clubs.

As a result, the young centre back being seen adorning the colours of one of Leicester’s top-flight rivals stirred a reaction on social media, but Fofana was quick to explain how the moment came about.

‘OK mates. I have been tricked by some former friends wearing an Arsenal jersey,’ Fofana wrote on Twitter.

‘I played a football game (as coach I cannot run) with some friends and at the end we exchanged jerseys.

‘I have been photographed in, what I thought, was my private sphere. I had obviously no thinking that what was a friendly game and joke will end up in social networks.

Fofana took to social media to explain how the picture came about and has apologised to fans

‘I feel sorry for our fans and angry against the guys that have seized the opportunity to make this bad buzz.

‘Sorry for all Arsenal friends, I have strictly no problem with the red but only the blue is in my heart.’

To caption the post, Fofana jokingly mocked his ability in the technical area, adding: ‘I’m not a good coach we lost 20 to 5’ with several crying and laughing emojis.

Fofana impressed during his debut season at Leicester and has reportedly attracted attention

The 20-year-old is currently on holiday in Dubai during the off-season, and will miss the European Under-21 Championships due to a shoulder injury.

He made 38 appearances in all competitions in the recent campaign, helping them to win their first-ever FA Cup trophy and deservedly being named the club’s Young Player of the Season.

Fofana’s contract runs until 2025, and Leicester will be unwilling to part ways with one of their prized assets as they look to finally break into the Champions League.

Last month, it was reported in France that Manchester United had made contact with the club about signing Fofana.

Foot Mercato claimed the impressive form from the starlet led to United, who are actively on the hunt for another commanding centre back this summer, making an initial approach.

The report added, however, that United would have had to stump up a similar figure to the £80m they splashed out on captain Harry Maguire in 2019.

Leicester, meanwhile, are closing in on a £20m deal for Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare, as reported by Sportsmail, with at least three signings expected.
