Fernandes reveals special reason for giving Man Utd penalty to Rashford

Bruno Fernandes is supporting Marcus Rashford’s push to be the Champions League’s top scorer this season as Manchester United sealed a 4-1 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday evening.

Fernandes’ stunning strike opened the scoring for United and the Portugal international doubled his tally in the 19th minute.

However, Fernandes passed up the chance to score an early hat-trick as he opted to give United’s penalty to Rashford, who sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Daniel James struck late on to complete the victory which puts United top of Group H and in with a strong chance of reaching the knockout phase with games against Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig remaining.

Meanwhile, Rashford now has five goals in Europe this season, one behind Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, who is the competition’s top scorer.

And Fernandes believes it will be important for Rashford to be the Champions League’s leading marksman.

Asked if he was feeling charitable in his decision to give the penalty to Rashford, Fernandes told BT Sport: ‘No, that’s not the point.

‘Of course, everyone wants to score a hat-trick but after the game in the Premier League [against West Brom] I told Rashy the next one he will take.

‘I remembered that and also because he is one of the top scorers in the Champions League.

‘I think it will be important for him to keep going there and taking that confidence.

‘As I say, it doesn’t matter who takes the penalties. The most important thing is scoring and the team scores. When the team scored I score too.’

Speaking about Fernandes’ decision to give the penalty to Rashford, Solskjaer said: ‘Marcus is a very good penalty taker as well, Bruno is very confident, if Bruno feels he wants to give it to Marcus, so be it.’
