Erik ten Hag gobsmacked by row with Jadon Sancho and how it’s escalated

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been left gobsmacked at the way his bust-up with Jason Sancho has spiralled.

Ten Hag left the England winger out of his squad for the trip to Arsenal as he decided the £73 million signing needed to be reminded of the standards expected after some poor displays in training. Sources close to Ten Hag claim he hoped Sancho’s omission would give the 23-year-old the jolt the Dutchman felt he needed.

Therefore, Ten Hag was left deeply disappointed when Sancho responded with an incendiary post on his X account (formerly Twitter), claiming he was being made a scapegoat for the team’s erratic start to the season. The post has been pinned at the top of Sancho’s account for almost a week.

Ten Hag reckons the issue has been blown out of proportion and believes it can still be resolved, with Sancho still in his plans if he can prove his worth.

However, the former Ajax boss is also adamant that he cannot allow his authority to be openly challenged by a player.

It is believed Ten Hag would have not stood in Sancho’s way if United had been able to agree a deal to send the former Borussia Dortmund ace to the Saudi Pro League.

Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq club wanted to take the winger on loan, but wouldn’t accept a £50million obligation to buy. United were also prepared to listen to offers for Sancho during the transfer window, although moving other out-of-favour players on was more of a priority.

Ten Hag spoke last year about the mental issues Sancho has faced since moving back to Manchester two years ago. He sent the winger to the Netherlands to undergo an individual training programme that was designed to help him.

But the United boss also knows there comes a time when one of the most expensive players in his ranks has to prove his worth.

Sancho certainly has a fight on his hands if he is to get back in his manager’s good books as he is now below youngsters Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellestri in the Old Trafford pecking order.
