Diego Simeone hints at Atletico Madrid exit after ‘worst result of reign’

Diego Simeone has hinted he could leave Atletico Madrid following Copa del Rey defeat at the hands of third-tier Cornella.

Atletico are flying high at the top of La Liga though were humbled on Wednesday, losing 1-0 thanks to a goal from former Atletico B defender Adrian Jimenez.

Spanish media described it as one of the worst results during Simeone’s 502 games in charge of the club.

And the man himself hinted that he may not be in charge for next season’s Copa del Rey despite league success.

"[Cornella] played better," he said. "In the whole game, what they wanted was always done better than what we wanted.

"They took advantage of the set-piece situations and immediately found the goal.

"The boys tried to compete in the best way. In the first half, we had more chances, and in the second, it was rockier. It got difficult after the red card.

"This competition has not given us satisfaction in recent years but solutions will have to be found if we are here next year."

Simeone had made some changes for the clash, though Atletico were still expected to breeze through.

The boss added: “Things change all the time in football, and you have to be open to all possibilities.

“I’m very happy here but you have to be open to whatever the club decides.”

Atletico Madrid return to La Liga action on Saturday as they host mid-table Athletic Bilbao. That’s followed with a meeting with Sevilla.

League form shouldn’t be a concern for Simeone with his side currently two points clear of Real Madrid while having two games in hand.

Atletico have won 12 of their 15 league fixtures, and tasted defeat just once, conceding six goals all season.
