Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘tactics worked’ in dispute with Man Utd, law expert claims

Cristiano Ronaldo's "tactics worked" in his dispute with Manchester United according to a law expert.

The Red Devils confirmed that Ronaldo has left the club with immediate effect on Tuesday evening in the wake of his explosive interview with Piers Morgan. The 37-year-old criticised the club's owners, current manager Erik ten Hag, former interim boss Ralf Rangnick and his own team-mates with his bombshell comments.

However, following his exit from Old Trafford, a law expert has claimed that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has got what he wanted from the situation after having his contract terminated via mutual consent.

Mike Tremeer, an employment partner at law firm Fladgate, explained: "It appears that Ronaldo’s tactics have worked and that his behaviour has made United realise that there is no merit in keeping him at the club against his wishes.

"We had heard that United were exploring whether they could pursue a legal claim against Ronaldo – which seemed very unlikely from the start.

"It is notoriously difficult to demonstrate any financial loss that has been suffered directly because of an employee’s actions in cases like this. Further, the media attention that such a claim would attract would probably be very damaging for the club and distracting for its players and manager.

"No details of the terms of his exit have been released, other than it is by “mutual agreement”. However, it is expected both parties will have wanted certainty that this represents an end to the matter and a “clean break” between them. So it seems very likely that each will have settled any alleged claims that they had against the other."

Meanwhile, a separate lawyer has added that the news Ronaldo's contract has been terminated should come as no surprise to fans.

Simon Leaf, Head of Sport at Mishcon de Reya, commented: "Given the explosive nature of the allegations made against Manchester United, its Directors and Owners by Ronaldo, and equally, the clear breach of contract by Ronaldo that would have potentially entitled Manchester United to terminate Ronaldo's contract for 'gross misconduct', this announcement comes as no surprise to anyone."

Now without a club, Ronaldo is currently with the Portugal squad in Qatar as they prepare to take on Ghana in their opening World Cup match on Thursday.
