Cole said that a couple of performances ‘struck’ his eye including that of the Southampton midfielder.

He said at half-time with the score still goalless: ‘It’s been okay. A couple of individual performances have struck my eye but it’s been difficult to break down Romania.

‘Ward-Prowse showed immense quality in some of the balls he delivered in. He’s played well so far.’

Cole’s fellow pundit Ian Wright also praised Ben White who is also hoping to get a late inclusion in the 26-man squad.

The former Arsenal striker said: ‘Ben White has to get a mention as well. Ward-Prowse is that midfielder who is staking a claim. He’s tigerish. He’s one of those that chases the ball down.’

Roy Keane who was also part of the punditry team described Ward-Prowse’s first-half performance as professional.

Ward-Prowse lasted 65 minutes before he was replaced by Declan Rice.

The empty spot in the squad came after Alexander-Arnold suffered a late thigh injury in England’s 1-0 victory over Austria on Wednesday.

There are five players on the standby list who could replace the full-back, with Ward-Prowse, White, Ben Godfrey, Jesse Lingard and Ollie Watkins all in the frame.

Southgate is expected to make his announcement within the next 24 hours.
