Chelsea star Olivier Giroud admits he ‘almost’ signed for Tottenham this year

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has admitted he came close to joining bitter rivals Tottenham in the January transfer window.

Giroud, 33, only made five Premier League appearances in the first half of last season, meaning he was desperate to leave Stamford Bridge at the turn of the year.

However, the Blues’ failure to find a suitable replacement meant he was forced to stay put – and in the end that proved a blessing in disguise.

The Frenchman went on to become a crucial member of Frank Lampard’s side at the back end of the campaign, with his return of eight goals in 13 league outings helping them secure a fourth-place finish.

He also played an important part in Chelsea’s run to the FA Cup final, where they suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat against his former club Arsenal.

Giroud has opened up on his desire to leave the west London outfit back in January, admitting he was even prepared to swap London allegiances again by joining Spurs.

“During the last three days of the transfer window, I was in the coach's office to find a solution. I was hoping Chelsea would find a replacement for me,” he told So Foot.

“For my part, it was not the solutions that were lacking: I almost signed for Lazio, Inter… I was even so determined to leave that I even almost signed for Tottenham!”

This season Giroud faces another battle for first-team football at Chelsea following the £54million arrival of Timo Werner.

The Germany striker has moved straight to the front of Lampard’s pecking order, making his full debut in their opening 3-1 win away at Brighton on Monday night.

And despite not marking it with a goal, Lampard was delighted with his Blues bow.

“I love the way that Timo pops up in different areas. He’s not a frontman that attaches to centre-backs so much,” he said.

“He has a real hunger to score goals and be ruthless in those areas. So I think we saw a lot of signs from Timo tonight of what he’s gonna bring.”
