Chelsea ‘discuss late loan move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez but need to sell fringe players such as Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley first’ to secure move for Spaniard

  • Chelsea could make a loan move for Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez, say reports
  • The 26-year-old played 33 times for Diego Simeone’s LaLiga champions last term
  • Saul has a £128million release clause at Atleti, who have financial concerns
  • Manchester United also want Saul, who has been offered across Europe by Atleti

Chelsea are contemplating a late loan move in the transfer window for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez but need to offload players first, according to reports.

The Blues made a statement regarding their Premier League title intentions by spending £98million on Inter Milan forward Romelu Lukaku, who scored on his second Chelsea debut against Arsenal on Sunday.

Sportsmail revealed this week that Chelsea are monitoring Saul’s situation who has suffered a tumultuous transfer window in Spain, after being considered by Atleti in a loan swap deal with Barcelona’s Antoine Griezmann earlier this summer.

But according to The Telegraph, Chelsea can only make a move for the Spanish midfielder should the Blues trim their squad down.

The report says Atleti are prepared to sell for around £38m this summer but a loan deal could be agreed as well.

Full back Davide Zappacosta is joining Atalanta on an initial loan with view to permanent £8million deal, while striker Ike Ugbo is joining Genk for £5m.

Chelsea are also close to agreeing another loan to AC Milan for Tiemoue Bakayoko while the club are also looking at exits for midfielders Ross Barkley and Danny Drinkwater in the final week of the transfer window.

Saul played 33 times for Atleti last season as Diego Simeone’s side won the LaLiga title

Saul, meanwhile, played 33 times in the league last season as Atletico Madrid won the LaLiga title ahead of their rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, he was not selected by Luis Enrique for Spain’s Euro 2020 squad earlier this summer.

The midfielder has a buy-out clause at the Spanish club for £128million but growing financial pressure at Atleti means a they open to selling one of their key midfielders for a reduced price.

Sportsmail revealed that Manchester United have long been interested in Saul while the 26-year-old has been offered to the likes of Barcelona and Juventus this summer.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are close to agreeing a deal for Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde, as Thomas Tuchel plans to strengthen his side even further.

However, the Blues need the sale of Kurt Zouma to West Ham to go through, a transfer which is being held up due to the Frenchman’s wage demands.

A £26million fee had been agreed for Zouma to move to the Hammers, who top the Premier League after two games, but the France international wants £125,000 a week. Sevilla’s Kounde is rated at £68m and Chelsea need to sell to fund a move.
