Rio Ferdinand claims Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is looking to sign Lionel Messi.

Barcelona announced on Tuesday that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner has sensationally requested to leave the Nou Camp this summer.

The 33-year-old has spent his entire professional career with the Catalan club and it was previously unthinkable that he could play for another club in Europe.

But last season was one of the worst that Messi has had to endure with the Spaniards ending it trophy-less for the first time since 2014.

And their campaign ended with one of Messi and Barcelona’s most embarrassing results after an 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final.

Now Messi is thought to be looking for pastures new and several top clubs are already being mentioned.

Manchester City, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain are three clubs that could possible afford the Argentine, but others like Chelsea and Inter Milan could also stake their claim.

And former Red Devils captain Ferdinand’s post on social media has got fans wondering that a move to Stamford Bridge could be a possibility.

He wrote: “Just heard Frank Lampard is now in for #messi Some window this if Lamps pulls this off !!”

Chelsea have already spent big this summer with deals for Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, while others like Kai Havertz look set to follow.

But making moves to sign Messi would trump the lot, although it is not yet fully clear how much it may take to get him.

Messi's release clause is £630million, which was put in place when the forward signed a new four-year contract with Barcelona in 2017. That deal expires in 2021.

Prior to that, Messi's buyout clause was £270m, with the figure increasing after PSG paid a world record £198m to trigger Neymar's release.

But though his contract is set to expire at the end of the 2020-21 season, Messi and his legal team believe the clause will allow him to terminate his deal unilaterally – allowing him to leave for free before it ends.

Chelsea or any other clubs would still have to prepared to pay his substantial wages were they to agree a deal to sign Messi, however.
