Carabao Cup could be sacrificed as part of Champions League expansion
The League Cup looks set to be sacrificed if Premier League top clubs get their way over plans to expand the Champions League.
There is no room for the competition, which is currently sponsored by energy drink Carabao, as the footballing calendar is set to drastically change.
At the last shareholder meeting, there was a unanimous agreement on three points of contention with the latest Uefa-led plans for a 36-team competition from 2024.
It means league chiefs will now seek verification from UEFA over plans to expand the current 125 matches in the competition to 225, starting the opening phase in January.
But that can only come to fruition if the teams in Europe are excluded from the Carabao Cup.
All 20 clubs agreed that the future of the competition would need to be discussed further, leaving the door open to completely getting rid of it.
The traditional ‘top six’ teams are part of the influential European Club Association, who backs the UEFA scheme.
Chief executive Charlie Marshall said at the FT Business of Football Summit: “More European matches are important in the development of football.
“These plans are bang in the centre of where we are coming from and we don’t see causes for alarm, which seems to be hysteria and reactionism.”

Head of current Champions League and Europa League broadcaster BT Sport Simon Green also gave his say.
Green said: "Of course a European Super League would be extremely appealing to broadcasters but it would not be worth as much as the existing leagues and Champions League are at the moment.
“It would be undoing the value that already exists and reinventing something that is worth less, while undoing the strengths of the leagues.
Overall, maintaining what exists now is the best strategy football should adopt, rather than reinventing something which theoretically will do better – because it won’t.”
