Borussia Dortmund 5-1 Freiburg: Haaland and Meunier crush Freiburg

Borussia Dortmund 5-1 Freiburg: Erling Haaland and Thomas Meunier doubles help the Bundesliga giants crush Freiburg to keep the pressure on league leaders Bayern Munich at the top of the table

  • Borussia Dortmund eased to a 5-1 win over Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Friday
  • Erling Haaland and Thomas Meunier both netted braces for Marco Rose’s side
  • Dortmund are three points behind Bayern Munich having played a game more

Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland snapped a two-game goal drought to score twice while fullback Thomas Meunier added two more as their side hammered visiting Freiburg 5-1 on Friday to move within striking distance of leaders Bayern Munich.

Following Dortmund’s 3-2 dramatic fightback to secure victory against Eintracht Frankfurt last time out, Dortmund head coach Marco Rose opted for an unchanged lineup for the first time this campaign.

Haaland was involved in all three goals against the Eagles and the forward looked in electric form in the early stages in this one, lashing a ball across the face of goal only to bypass both Marco Reus and Jude Bellingham.

The defender netted twice helping his side keep the pressure on league leaders Bayern Munich

Christian Streich’s visitors had boasted an away record second only to Bayern Munich’s this term, but were second best throughout and found themselves behind twice before the half-hour mark.

Fullback Meunier powered home a header at the near post from a Julian Brandt corner after 14 minutes and doubled the lead in the 29th, nodding in another Brandt corner. He had only scored once before in the Bundesliga since joining in 2020.

Haaland then got in on the action, quickly peeling away from teammate Bellingham to race into the box, latching onto a perfectly timed through ball from the England international, and tapping in Dortmund’s third goal on the stroke of halftime.

The Norwegian bagged his second on the 75 minutes, his 55th goal in 56 Bundesliga matches, after Ermedin Demirovic had pulled a goal back for the visitors just past the hour.

Haaland now has four goals in five meetings with Freiburg, and 15 in total in this season’s Bundesliga.
