Billy Gilmour reportedly wants a move away from Chelsea in the summer transfer window after playing just five times under Thomas Tuchel.

But the 19-year-old isn't angling for a permanent exit – instead he wants to follow in Mason Mount's footsteps by going on loan to earn crucial first-team experience.

Mount spent the 2018/19 season on loan at Derby County under Frank Lampard, who integrated the midfielder into his Chelsea team when he took charge at Stamford Bridge the following summer.

Since then Mount's career has sky-rocketed, with the 22-year-old set to be a big player for England at the Euro 2020 after starring under Tuchel this term.

And Gilmour believes a temporary move next season can similarly help him take his game to the next level, according to The Sun.

The teenager is highly rated at Chelsea, but is behind N'Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in the midfield pecking order.

His lack of game time didn't prevent him from being picked in Scotland's Euro 2020 squad, and some decent performances at the tournament could help put him in the shop window for a loan.

Gilmour was close to leaving Chelsea on loan in the January transfer window, but Tuchel kept him at the club after being replacing Lampard at the end of that month.

However, the youngster was to make just a handful of appearances as his manager preferred the experience of Kante, Jorginho and Kovacic to help steer the Blues to a top-four finish and last month's Champions League triumph.

Newcastle were recently linked with a loan swoop for Gilmour, after Joe Willock's temporary spell at the club was mutually beneficial for the Magpies, the player himself and his parent club Arsenal.

Mount spent two seasons away on loan before becoming a crucial first-team star for Chelsea, with his Pride Park campaign following a season away at Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem.
