Barcelona starlet Gavi ‘does a Phil Jones’ with spectacular diving header tackle

Barcelona star Gavi channelled his inner Phil Jones with a spectacular diving header tackle during his side's 1-0 over Athletic Club.

Barca ground out a 1-0 win over their La Liga opponents on Sunday courtesy of Raphinha's goal on the stroke of half time. And Gavi put his head on the line to ensure the Blaugrana maintained a nine-point lead over Real Madrid at the table's summit.

As Athletic tried to piece together a move, Gavi leaped in head-first to intercept the ball, and collided with the boot of the opposition player in the process. And impressed fans compared the 18-year-old's heroics to that of Man United star Jones, who used his head to prevent Arsenal's Olivier Giroud from scoring against the Red Devils in 2015.

One fan wrote whilst inserting a GIF of Jones' bravery: "Phil Jones did it first." And another fan concurred: "My thoughts exactly."

A third user was blown away by Gavi's valiance and gushed: "Wow! This guy is something. Superb." And not content with risking his head the first time, the midfielder nearly cracked his cranium AGAIN when he attempted to nod the ball out of Raul Garcia's path, resulting in his crown crashing into the striker's high-footed boot.

And users on Twitter couldn't believe the midfielder was still putting his head at risk. One fan mused: "You would think he learned his lesson after this," alongside a clip of the first encounter.

Then another fan implored: "Gavi, stop. You are going to die." But the Spanish starlet's no stranger to battles and bruises.

He had his hair yanked by Real Madrid ace Dani Ceballos in the Super Cup final in January. And he brutally floored Jones' United team-mate Bruno Fernandes in the Europa League last month.

As for Jones, the last time he got to strut his stuff was during was when he was given a 15-minute run-out against Brentford last year. The closest he's come to any action recently was during the Carabao Cup final where he bizarrely appeared as a pundit, leaving fans convinced that he'd retired.
