Barcelona are 'working to sign MORE players', reveals chief Laporta

Cash-strapped Barcelona are ‘working to sign MORE players’ this week, reveals president Joan Laporta amid interest in Lyon star Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum after the club sealed two deals in two days with Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia

  • Barcelona could welcome further recruits after signing Eric Garcia and Aguero
  • Club president Joan Laporta said the club are planning even more transfer deals
  • Lyon’s Memphis Depay is set to join on a free transfer when his deal ends
  • Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is another target for Ronald Koeman

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has teased the arrival of even more players after the club snapped up two signings in two day with Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia.

The LaLiga outfit are short on cash this summer after their finances took a hit during the Covid pandemic, and the club are looking to do a number of bargain deals – with Aguero and Garcia both arriving on free transfers.

But despite their vulnerable position, Barca still have plans to bolster the squad, according to Laporta – who admits it requires ‘balance’ after a disappointing season saw them fall away from the LaLiga title race.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta insists more players could arrive at the club next week

The club made two signings in two days, including centre back Eric Garcia on a free transfer

Sergio Aguero also joined on a free transfer after ending his stay at Manchester City

The newly-installed club chief promised he was working on new deals for fresh faces and said there could be news as soon as next week.

‘There will be more presentations of players, we’re working on it,’ he said at the press conference for Garcia’s unveiling.

‘We’re working to sign players that improve the first team. We need to balance the squad, you will see what we’re working on. Next week there will be more news.’

Last month Laporta spoke about how ‘a cycle has come to an end’, and promised big changes this summer after expressing his dismay with the team’s performance.

Memphis Depay will leave Lyon after his deal expires in June and is a target for Barcelona

And after making two strong signings in Garcia and Aguero, he is now eyeing a few more freebies – with Lyon forward Memphis Depay – whose deal expires this month – a long-term target.

Barca failed to secure his signature in October after refusing to pay Lyon’s £23m asking price and declined to pick him up in January – with the club opting to make their move when he became a free agent.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum – whose contract is also up at the end of June – has been linked with a switch to the Nou Camp having forged a good relationship with Koeman during their time together in the Holland national team.

The LaLiga giants are also keen on a free transfer swoop for Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum

He was quoted by Marca as saying there had indeed been contact from the Spanish giants as he prepares for Euro 2020 with the Dutch squad.

‘I cannot deny the contacts. I have just signed off from Liverpool and it is an interesting situation for many clubs.’

According to the reports, the 30-year-old is ready to commit to a three year deal ending in 2034, which could be announced before the European Championship gets underway on June 11.
