Barca board 'will meet TODAY to confirm Koeman for another season'
Barcelona’s board ‘will meet TODAY to confirm Ronald Koeman staying at the Nou Camp for another season’… and the under fire Dutchman ‘can trigger another year if he wins trophies with the club’
- Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has faced doubt over his future at the Nou Camp
- But the Dutchman looks likely to be given another year to prove his worth
- With a lack of alternatives, the board will reportedly confirm his position today
- Spanish media claim he can trigger another year if he leads the club to glory
Under-fire Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman will be confirmed as the club’s manager for another season at a board meeting today, according to Spanish media.
The Dutchman has faced a nervy wait to determine whether he will take charge for the 2021-22 campaign after a disappointing first year saw the team slip away from the LaLiga title conversation and dumped out of the Champions League.
President Joan Laporta had reportedly taken two weeks to look for possible replacements, but with a lack of suitable alternatives, ‘everything points’ to Koeman being given another chance to restore glory at Barca, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Ronald Koeman will be confirmed as Barca’s boss for the next season today after president Joan Laporta (R) holds a board meeting
‘Everything points towards him continuing’ for the 21-22 campaign, Spanish media reports
The Spanish outlet’s front page reads: ‘Koeman is imminent’, claiming the board will hold a meeting on Thursday to confirm his job is safe.
His current deal is slated to expire next summer, but Koeman will have the opportunity to extend that contract for another year should he secure silverware.
The former Everton and Holland coach won the Copa Del Rey to ensure the club did not finish the season empty handed – but chiefs are desperate to recapture the league crown after two years without it.
The under-fire boss has been holding talks with Barcelona chiefs over the last few weeks
Mundo Deportivo reads: ‘Koeman is imminent’ ahead of a Barca board meeting
Koeman is already planning for next season having met with vice president Rafa Yuste and director of football Mateu Alemany, the report claims, which was held ‘in good harmony’.
The fact Laporta was not present in those talks was a good sign for Koeman, it adds – with the trio drawing up a roadmap for next season.
Laporta has all but confirmed Koeman will be staying put, admitting this week he was ‘comfortable’ with him and said talks were going ‘very well’.
‘I feel very comfortable with him and I hope he does too. There were only a few points that I wanted to clarify and we are working on that. The conversations are going very well.
‘There is a very fluid communication. It won’t take you long to find out and I think this period of reflection was good.
Barcelona suffered a poor season but Koeman has been given another chance of glory
The team are rebuilding for next season after making three signings in as many days – including Sergio Aguero (L) and Eric Garcia (R)
‘With Koeman this is going to improve and both the team and the criteria so that what happened last season does not happen to us.’
Barcelona have had a busy week in addition to their discussions with Koeman – as they showed their ambitions by making a host of signings.
They signed a third player in as many days with the arrival of Real Betis star Emerson Royal, following on from the free transfers of Manchester City duo Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia.
With the club struggling financially as a result of the crippling Covid pandemic, they are looking to do bargain deals. Lyon’s Memphis Depay and Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum, whose contracts are also expiring, could be the next through the door.
