Arsenal icon Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang banged in 92 goals in 163 games for the Gunners and helped the team win the FA Cup in 2020. But his time in north London came to a wretched end as his contract was terminated mid-season ahead of a free transfer to Barcelona at the start of last year. And the Gabon international’s final insult to his former employers, as well as his questionable Twitter activity, certainly angered fans.
Aubameyang was a shining light for Arsenal after joining the club from Borussia Dortmund in 2018. But his relationship with the club turned sour following a series of disciplinary breaches. The striker developed a habit of turning up late and was dropped for the north London derby in March 2021 after being caught in traffic.
The ace was then stripped of the captaincy and banished from the team later that year as boss Mikel Arteta looked to move his team forward without him in the side.
Aubameyang appeared to be heading for the Emirates Stadium exit during the January 2022 transfer window, with the impasse with the Gunners showing no sign of ending. And, according to The Mirror, the forward’s final insult to the club came when he took it upon himself to fly to Barcelona before either Arsenal or the Catalan club had even agreed that a transfer would take place.

Aubameyang’s plan was to force through a transfer to the La Liga club. And the blockbuster star eventually got his way, even if his premature arrival in Spain had surprised the Nou Camp giants.
Aubameyang had left Arsenal fans furious 16 months before his Gunners departure when he liked a tweet that suggested he should be plying his trade for a bigger club. The tweet, which was written in French and had Aubameyang tagged in it, said: “He’s been so deserving of a team of the calibre of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, [Man] City, Liverpool, etc, not Arsenal for years.”

One angry fan on Twitter hit back: “If you felt you deserved a better team then go ahead and put in a transfer request. You’re not the first Arsenal captain to disappear.” And another one wrote: “I don’t understand that Aubameyang tweet at all, two days before a big game at Anfield as well. Stupid thing to do.”
Aubameyang went on to resurrect his career at the Nou Camp and racked up 13 goals in 24 appearances for Barcelona. But he returned to the Premier League last year when Chelsea paid £12million to acquire his services. He’s scored just three times in 18 appearances for the Blues, however.
