Arsenal should sign Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma who is “gettable” this month, according to former Tottenham striker Darren Bent. Arsenal have been linked with Bissouma in the past and Gunners fan Bent believes he would be the ideal midfield partner for Thomas Partey at the Emirates.

Bissouma has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Brighton.

Arsenal are on the lookout for midfield reinforcements this month, with Partey and Mohamed Elneny at the Africa Cup of Nations and Ainsley Maitland-Niles having left to join Roma on loan.

Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga are the only two senior options at Mikel Arteta’s disposal and the former has been isolating after testing positive for COVID-19.

Charlie Patino, 18, made his first start in Sunday’s FA Cup third round defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Arteta says he is looking to bring in a midfielder and Bent says Bissouma would be his top target.

“I would like to see Arsenal go and get Yves Bissouma from Brighton,” he said on talkSPORT.

“I really like him, I think he’s a top, top player. I think he’s gettable as well.

“Him and Partey in the middle of the park, that is what you call protection in front of the back four by the way.

“You let the likes of [Emile] Smith Rowe, [Martin] Odegaard bomb forward.

“If you can Yves Bissouma, I think he can turn into a top player in this league, I really do. Yeah I really like him.

“He’s one of those players that can be box-to-box but if you ask him to sit there, he’s comfortable in possession. Yeah he’s a top player.”

Arteta allowed Maitland-Niles to leave despite leaving him extremely short of midfield options.

But the Spaniard said that was not a good enough reason to block the player’s exit.

Arteta said last week: “We are very very short at the moment, but to be fair on a player this cannot be the only argument to try to keep a player, and a player who has been developed and raised through our Academy, and a player that has been patient in many moments to try to fulfil his dream.

“He was very straight with me, and I understood the situation and (for him) it’s a good option.

“So obviously we are going to move, and we are going to look for options, because we are very short.”
