Arsenal takeover leader Ek came up with Spotify name after mishearing partner
Arsenal’s takeover leader Daniel Ek came up with the Spotify name for his business after mishearing his business partner.
The Swedish billionaire, who co-founded the music streaming service in 2002, had been showing his intent at a £1.8bn offer to buy the Gunners from the Kroenkes with a consortium of club legends Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira.
And he is funding this with a net worth of £3.4bn from his business, who has grown with Swedish partner Martin Lorentzon.
But the naming of Spotify came amid an mis-communication between the two media moguls when they were first coming up with the idea.
According to Forbes, Ek was sitting in a separate room to his business partner.
And the pair were shouting potential names for the music streaming service to each other and the Swede actually ‘misheard’ Lorentzon.
After sticking the name into Google and finding no results, the pair registered the name and started working on growing the business.
Ek first expressed his desire to buy the Gunners, who he has supported since he was eight years old, while fans were protesting against the Kroenkes for their part in the European Super League.
Writing on Twitter during the north London side’s 1-0 defeat to Everton, the 38-year-old said: "As a kid growing up, I’ve cheered for Arsenal as long as I can remember. If KSE would like to sell Arsenal I'd be happy to throw my hat in the ring."

While the Swedish billionaire put pieces in place, the Kroenkes put out a statement saying they had “no intention of selling” Arsenal.
But Ek has intensified his interest in his latest interview, saying on CNBC : “I’m very serious, I have secured the funds for it and I want to bring a very compelling offer to the owners and I hope they hear me out.
“I certainly didn’t expect this will happen overnight and I prepared for this to be a long journey.”
