Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang teases contract announcement after Liverpool win

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has teased an update on his future in the next few days as he hailed what is “a really exciting time” to be at the club after lifting their second piece of silverware in less than a month. The Gunners striker played a key role as his side won the Community Shield against Liverpool at Wembley, scoring in normal time and also netting the decisive spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out.

Aubameyang put Arsenal 1-0 up on 12 minutes but the north London side were taken to penalties after Takumi Minamino’s equaliser in the final 20 minutes.

Despite tiring late on, Mikel Arteta’s men held on and even had the chance to win the game when substitute Joe Willock headed wide from a Cedric Soares cross.

In the shoot-out, Liverpool substitute Rhian Brewster was the only man to miss from 12 yards with Aubameyang scoring the decisive penalty.

That clinched Arsenal their second trophy inside a month after his brace in the FA Cup final win over Chelsea at the start of August.

But the Gabon international’s Emirates future is up in the air with less than 12 months on his contract.

Arsenal are understandably desperate to tie their skipper down to a new deal given his value to the team, having netted 29 times last term including four times in two games in the FA Cup semi-final and final.

And asked about an extension, the 31-year-old hinted that he will put pen to paper in the near future – with it thought he is set to sign a three-year, £350,000-a-week contract to commit his future to Arsenal.

“We’re going to see in these [next] days,” Aubameyang said when asked if he is to sign a new contract. “Today we’re going to take the trophy, that’s it.

“For sure, we are improving. There is still work to do but I’m really happy and it’s a really exciting time to be an Arsenal player.”

Arsenal manager Arteta meanwhile added in a separate interview: “We are close [on a new deal for Aubameyang].

“Big games, big moments, big players. He’s responding really well to that kind of pressure. He was magnificent in the FA Cup final and he was magnificent again today.”

Speaking alongside Ainsley Maitland-Niles, named BT Sport’s man of the match on the day of his 23rd birthday, Aubameyang continued: “I feel very good, first of all I have to say happy birthday bro!

“He was man of the match. Today we deserved the win. We’re going to take this trophy and this time hopefully I don’t drop it.

The Gabon striker opened the scoring in the first half with a brilliant curling finish from the edge of the box.

And he added: “I think we played well, we did a fantastic action, starting from the back. Bukayo gave me the ball and yes, then I chose to go for my right foot and shoot. That’s it. Very happy.”

Arteta was meanwhile delighted with the performance of his team, having had less than a week in pre-season training before taking on Jurgen Klopp’s title-winners.

“I’m so happy,” he continued. “I knew the challenge we were facing today. Thank you to the players for the effort and the performance.

“The courage of the team [was the most pleasing thing], how aggressive we were without the ball and to break the pressure of Liverpool.

“I knew in the second half we would suffer.

“This generates belief, to be able to compete against a team like this in a final makes me happy.”
