Arsenal new boy Omar Rekik breaks silence following Hertha Berlin transfer
Arsenal newcomer Omar Rekik has spoken out since confirming his surprise move to the Premier League club earlier this week.
The Gunners reportedly agreed a £540,000 fee with Hertha Berlin to sign the 19-year-old centre-back.
Arsenal managed to keep the deal under the radar, with the youngster not linked as a target before the window began.
But Rekik is keen to repay the north London club's faith in him when he finally gets the chance to feature for Mikel Arteta's side.
“Of course it would be a dream to be worth 60 million euros or even more,” he told BILD.
“Because that would mean that I’ve made great athletic development. But sporting success is more valuable to me.
“I don’t have a specific goal. If Arsenal had waited a few months, they would have got me without a transfer fee.
“Now they have spent so much money on me. I want to repay that with performance. The club is serious about me, and I’m grateful for that.”
And the youngster has explained the decision to leave Hertha, rather than staying put to gain more experience.
“For me, there was no longer any prospect at Hertha,” he added.
“I’ve played three great seasons here and quickly became one of the top performers in all the youth teams.
“I also trained with the pros when I was 16 years old.
“But nobody from Hertha came to me to talk about prospects and my future. Hertha only reacted when Arsenal contacted me.”
Judging by his Instagram page, Rekik lives a fairly lavish lifestyle, and has made no secret of that.
He played alongside former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou during the Ivorian’s time at Hertha, and the pair went on holiday together in the past.
A glance at the highlights reel on his page shows the pair on a yacht in Ibiza, where Rekik can be seen lounging about in Louis Vuitton gear.
