Arsenal hero Marc Overmars rates Donny van de Beek's chances at Man Utd

Ajax director of football, and former Arsenal star, Marc Overmars says Donny van de Beek is ‘ready for the this step’ as he completes his move to Manchester United.

The 23-year-old confirmed his move to Old Trafford on Wednesday in a deal reportedly worth £35m, with a further £5m in add-ons, which seems a tremendous bit of business for the Red Devils.

Real Madrid and Barcelona had also shown an interest in the Netherlands international over the last year, but United have won the race for his signature after failing to complete the transfer in January.

Overmars is sad to see another Ajax talent leave the club, following the likes of Frenkie De Jong, Matthjis De Ligt and Hakim Ziyech out of the door in the last year or so, but feels it is an excellent move for De Beek and he is ready to be a hit in the Premier League.

‘This is a great transfer for Donny, one which he deserves,’ said Overmars. ‘Last summer there was a lot of interest but luckily we were able to keep him for one more year.

‘He’s ready for this step & we’ll miss him.’

De Beek has spent his entire career at Ajax and the club sent him a special message after his departure was confirmed.

‘You will always be one of us,’ Ajax tweeted. ‘Good luck with your new dream. #DreamLikeDonny.’

Manchester United fans are now desperate to see how the Dutchman will fit into the midfield at the club alongside Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

Van de Beek is relishing the chance to link up with the Portuguese and French superstars and promises to add goals and assists to the United side.

‘I was watching a lot of them [Pogba and Fernandes],’ Van de Beek told the official Manchester United website.

‘There are a lot of good players in the midfield and I can’t wait to play with them. It will be really nice and I will enjoy playing with these kinds of football players.

‘I am a midfielder that likes to go into the box – making runs, goals, assists.

‘A lot of the time, I cover a lot of distance in games, this is also a thing that is a strength for me, to get into the box of the opponent.

‘If you know me and the kind of player I am, and my style and everything, I think I can have a good combination with the club and players.

‘If you look at the players the club has, they are young players, the same age like me and I cannot wait to play with them.’
