Arsenal-bound Nuno Tavares is a “difficult personality” with “defensive frailties”, according to reports. Benfica left-back Tavares is set to join Arsenal for an initial fee of just under £7million. The 21-year-old has flown to England to finalise his move to the Emirates.

Arsenal have been in the market for a left-back since the January transfer window.

Kieran Tierney’s sketchy injury past has led to Mikel Arteta seeking backup for the Scotland international.

Arteta is clearly not a fan of Sead Kolasinac, who was allowed to leave on loan in January despite there not being a recognised replacement in the squad.

Tavares appears to be the player Arsenal have settled upon, with a deal likely to be announced soon.

Transfer expert Duncan Castles says Arsenal may have completed a shrewd piece of business with the Portuguese youngster.

However, having spoken to followers of the player, there are a couple of concerns ahead of his Gunners transfer.

“Another signing for Arsenal, one that has been fully agreed, is Nuno Tavaves,” Castles said on Reach PLC’s Transfer Window podcast.

“Interesting one this, he’s obviously being signed as cover and as a development player, and an option they can have alongside Kieran Tierney.

“People I speak to who are paid to assess the quality of Portuguese footballers say he’s a difficult personality, but a very good attacking full-back with defensive frailties.

“Other people will tell you that the price is relatively low because he’s not that great but I’ll trust my expert on this and it looks like Arsenal have done a reasonable bit of business getting Tavares in as an addition to their squad.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal remain interested in signing Brighton defender Ben White.

Castles says a new and improved offer was submitted earlier this week but a fee is yet to be agreed with the Seagulls.

He said: “My understanding is that this week they have improved their offer, increased the initial down payment and made the schedule of the payments over the course of the contract more attractive to Brighton.

“But as yet there is not an agreement between the two clubs on the transfer fee.

“Why not an agreement? I think it’s the degree of interest in White, his age, young England international, his speed and comfort on the ball.

“It’s the balance of characteristics that clubs are looking for in defenders these days.”
