Ander Herrera sends message to Edinson Cavani over three-game suspension

Former Manchester United star Ander Herrera has questioned the Football Association’s decision to hand Edinson Cavani a three-game suspension following a controversial social media post.

The 33-year-old summer signing produced a match-winning display at Southampton on November 29, providing an assist for Bruno Fernandes before netting a brace in a 3-2 comeback win.

Cavani posted on Instagram shortly after the match, replying to a message of congratulations using the Spanish term ‘negrito’, which translates as ‘black’.

The Uruguayan swiftly deleted the post and issued an apology after being made aware of the connotations, with the player releasing an apologetic statement the following day saying he was ‘completely opposed to racism’.

But the FA charged the former Paris Saint-Germain star with ‘misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3’ in relation to his social media post on December 19 and has now banned him for three games.

Herrera was a team-mate of Cavani’s during their time together at Paris Saint-Germain, and the Spanish midfielder feels the punishment handed out to the veteran striker was over the top.

‘If they ban you for that. The world is going to s***,’ Herrera wrote on Instagram. ‘Big hugs and stay strong Ed.’

Cavani will now miss the upcoming games against Aston Villa, Manchester City and an FA Cup third round tie against Watford.

Responding to news of the ban last night, Cavani wrote on Twitter: ‘Hello everyone. I do not want to extend much in this uncomfortable moment for me. I want to share with you that I accept the disciplinary sanction knowing that I am foreign to English language customs, but I do not share the point of view.

‘I apologise if I offended someone with an expression of affection towards a friend, nothing further in my intention. Those who know me know that my effort always seeks the simplest joy and friendship!

‘I appreciate the countless expressions of support and affection. ‘My heart is at peace, because I know that I always expressed myself with affection according to my culture and way of life. I send you a sincere hug.’
