Alaba ‘makes key transfer demand’ as Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid eye deal
David Alaba has set his sights on joining a team who intend to use him as a central midfielder this summer, according to reports.
The Austrian defender is set to call time on his 12-year Bayern Munich career at the end of the season, having reached an impasse in negotiations with Allianz Arena chiefs over a new contract.
Having played a key part in Bayern’s Bundesliga and Champions League success over the past decade, he is not short of suitors ahead of the summer transfer window.
A host of European clubs are said to be interested in snapping him up for free this summer, with Real Madrid reportedly leading the race for his signature.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are also understood to be circling, while Paris St-Germain have also been linked with a move.
According to French publication Le Parisien, Alaba will prioritise signing for a team who intend to play him in the centre of midfield as opposed to at the back.
The 28-year-old operates primarily as a left-back, but he has also been used as a centre-back and a deep-lying midfielder by both Bayern and Austria in recent years.
His desire to operate in the middle of the park could deter Liverpool from pursuing him this summer, as they already have a packed midfield containing the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Thiago Alcantara.

Chelsea, too, may find it difficult to promise Alaba game time in midfield with Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante already at their disposal, while United have a host of options including Scott McTominay, Fred, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.
Reports suggest Los Blancos are in pole position to sign him at the end of the season, but they also have Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric and Federico Valverde operating in midfield.
PSG, however, appear in need of a revamp this summer and could offer him game time in midfield alongside Marco Verratti and Leandro Paredes.
Alaba has made 417 appearances in his 12-year spell at Bayern, scoring 33 goals and winning nine Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues and six DFB-Pokals.
