Match Report – Hull 18 – 33 St Helens

St Helens withstood a second-half fightback from Hull FC to claim a 33-18 victory and progress to their second Challenge Cup final in three years.

First-half tries from Regan Grace and Theo Fages helped Saints into a 14-2 interval lead at Leigh Sports Village, Fages scoring after Josh Griffin suffered a suspected Achilles injury and dropped the ball.

Jack Welsby extended St Helens’ advantage to 18 points on 48 minutes but Hull hit back with tries from Mahe Fonua, Danny Houghton and Cameron Scott to set up a gripping finish.

A superb 40-20 from Jake Connor gave Hull a glorious opportunity to move in front but their hopes were dashed by an intercept from Grace, who sprinted downfield to score.

Lachlan Coote kicked six goals and crossed for a late try for St Helens, who will face Castleford Tigers or Warrington Wolves in next month’s final as they bid to win the Challenge Cup for the first time since 2008.
