NASCAR at Bristol: William Byron calls Joey Gase an idiot for ending his playoff hopes

William Byron’s 2020 NASCAR playoff run ended with a busted front after his car apparently ran into the back of Joey Gase’s car at Bristol on Saturday. We write “apparently” because, to the dismay of racing fans at home, NBCSN did not replay the incident.

In fact, NASCAR’s initial crash report says nothing of Gase, instead suggesting Byron collided with Christopher Bell.

Byron did his best to provide color following the race-ending crash, which ensured he would not advance to the Round of 12. He seemed to believe it was Gase who caused the problem.

“I don’t know why he just stopped in the middle of the straightaway,”  Byron said of Gase. “What an idiot.”

Byron had been running close with Clint Bowyer for the final advancement position.

Part of the reason NBC’s coverage of recent races has at times been less fluid than usual is because of the increased use of remote coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Still, a huge playoff moment is something fans (and reporters) expect to watch, and it was a strange and quite notable omission from the broadcast.
