Brundle ‘knows’ where ‘mischievous’ Hamilton to Ferrari rumour came from

Martin Brundle has revealed he knows where the latest rumours linking Lewis Hamilton with Ferrari originated – and says he would love to see the F1 legend join the Italian squad.

Reports have been circulating ahead of Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix claiming that Hamilton is wanted by Ferrari, who are said to be prepared to pay the Englishman £40m per season.

It has been suggested that Hamilton would be open to a late-career team switch due to Mercedes’ struggles both last year and this. In the pre-weekend press conference, the 38-year-old denied having any contact with Ferrari and revealed he was actually close to penning a new deal with the Silver Arrows.

Sky Sports analyst and former F1 racer Brundle believes Hamilton moving to Ferrari would be a great storyline for the sport and cryptically dropped in that he knew the source of the recent rumours.

“With my Sky F1 cap on and my F1 cap on, I would love to see Lewis in a Ferrari,” he said ahead of practice. “Him going there and trying to win a championship like Michael Schumacher, I think it would be a wonderful story for next year.

“I even know where the rumour came from, it’s all been a bit mischievous but I can’t tell you that. But it makes no sense for him to step away from Mercedes at this time.”

Brundle added that Hamilton was no longer indispensable to Mercedes. He said: “Things are a bit different at Mercedes now because they’ve got George [Russell], who is a potential world champion of the future.

“They’re not just leaning on Lewis now. The dynamics may have changed in the negotiations. But Lewis is box office, he transcends this sport far more than any other driver.

“You can see him driving for a good while longer yet. I don’t see him fading as a driver, he’s looks fit, he looks sharp, he doesn’t appear to have any motivational issues at all.”
