USA TODAY Sports college football staff picks for Week 10

It's all been building to this. The best weekend of the college football season so far.

The biggest test on the schedule for No. 1 Alabama comes this week in Baton Rouge against No. 4 LSU. The Tide have cruised through the first two months of the season and looked unbeatable, but this will be their first challenge against an elite defense in a hostile environment.

The stakes couldn't be higher. Alabama takes the West with a win, while the Tigers would get the inside track to the division. The victor also gets a huge boost to its College Football Playoff hopes.

The showdown, however, is not the only huge game in the SEC this week. No. 5 Georgia travels to No. 12 Kentucky to settle things in the East. Both the Bulldogs and Wildcats have one league loss and one conference game left after Saturday, so the winner clinches the division and a trip to Atlanta.

Meanwhile, there's the matter of the Big Ten East. No. 5 Michigan hosts No. 13 Penn State with Wolverines hoping to extend their seven-game win streak and stay unbeaten in the conference. The Nittany Lions will have motivation even if they only have faint hopes of winning the division. They will provide the biggest test for Jim Harbaugh's team since its season-opening loss to Notre Dame.

There's also a key contest in Big 12 with No. 10 West Virginia visiting No. 15 Texas. The Mountaineers and Longhorns are two parts of a three-way tie for first with Oklahoma. The home team will look to rebound after last week's loss to Oklahoma State. The visitor needs to show its ability to win on the road after stumbling at Iowa State.
