TAB Classic: Three-year-old filly Instant Celebrity ready to star

Trainer Phillip Stokes expects his three-year-old gun Instant Celebrity has the right grounding to show her “electric” best in Saturday’s Group 1 TAB Classic (1200m) at Morphettville.

The Not A Single Doubt filly is looking to become the second three-year-old filly of the past decade to capture the feature sprint, formerly known as the Robert Sangster Stakes, after Shoals in 2018.

Instant Celebrity already boasts a Group 1 placing to her name after rocketing home to finish third behind Odeum and Personal in the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield last October.

Stokes sent her to the paddock for a lengthy break following the mile assignment with a plan to have a crack at the South Australian carnival and more Group 1 goals.

The TAB Classic is the first of her major assignments and Stokes believes Instant Celebrity is ready to peak after a first-up fourth in the Listed Redelva Stakes (1100m) on April 17.

“She is going well and has got that run under her belt after a long spell,” Stokes said.

“We said that we thought she needed it and was racing in benchmark 70s before stepping up to a Group race so it’s a different scenario this time.

“We just needed to get that run under the belt and she has produced another couple of nice pieces of work on Saturday and then on Tuesday so she is right where we want her.

“The big track at Morphettville over 1200m should be ideal.

“When she is on song she has an electric turn of foot.”

A field of 16 fillies and mares is set to line up in the TAB Classic this weekend.

Instant Celebrity opened at $11 with TAB fixed odds to win the Classic following Tuesday’s barrier draw but had been supported into an outright $6.50 favourite by Thursday afternoon.

The filly has drawn favourably in barrier 6 with Melbourne Cup winning jockey Craig Williams jumping back on-board for the first time since last spring.

“She has a good barrier and Craig Williams obviously knows her well,” Stokes said.

“He has been chasing the ride on her and didn’t want anyone else to ride her so that’s a positive.”

Instant Celebrity will likely be given the chance to claim an Adelaide sprint double with the Group 1 The Goodwood also an option after Saturday.

Instant Celebrity is a $17 chance in betting for The Goodwood where Behemoth and Gytrash share favouritism at $4.
