Melbourne Racing Club hoping for 9000-strong crowd for Blue Diamond Stakes meeting at Caulfield
Caulfield has lodged an application with the State Government to host up to 9000 racegoers at Saturday’s Blue Diamond Stakes meeting.
Under the revised Melbourne Racing Club’s COVID-safe plan for its banner triple Group 1 card, the crowd would be split across three separate areas, each with 3000 ticketed patrons, including members.
MRC had approvals for a bumper 15,000-strong crowd prior to the snap five-day statewide lockdown, which ended at 11.59pm Wednesday.
Once approved, the spectators, including MRC members and racehorse owners, must adhere to social distancing requirements.
Spectator limits will differ between other race meetings depending on each club’s COVID-safe event plan under the Public Events Framework.

The Valley will offer free seated general admission tickets for its Group 2 meeting on Friday night. Face masks must be worn indoors, when visiting stables and when unable to socially distance outside.
Starting on Thursday morning, owners will again be permitted to attend public and private training centres, for the primary purpose of visiting their horses, including for trackwork, provided stables maintain attendance logs.
Racing Victoria chief executive Giles Thompson welcomed the safe return of owners and crowds.
“The clubs and Racing Victoria are continuing to liaise with Government on the number of spectators that will be permitted to attend each meeting,” Thompson said. “Once confirmed, this will be communicated by host clubs so I encourage all racegoers to monitor club websites closely for information on the number of permitted attendees and registration.
“I would ask everyone within the Victorian racing industry to remain vigilant and comply with all Government directives to ensure the safe continuation of racing and training in our state.
“In particular, if any person or a close contact, is unwell and displaying any symptoms of COVID-19, or has been to a public exposure site, must not attend any racecourse, training centre or licensed premises in Victoria until cleared to do so.”
