Local trainer Saab Hasan to team up with star jockey Jamie Kah with Sirius Suspect in Group 1 Newmarket Handicap
Star jockey Jamie Kah could be the final ingredient to give trainer Saab Hasan his maiden Group 1 win in Saturday’s Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.
Hasan has trained for more than 15 years, building a small stable at Flemington, sometimes punching above his weight when opportunities arise.
Hasan’s work with Sirius Suspect has created a chance to win Saturday’s $1.5 million Newmarket Handicap. Bookmakers think Sirius Suspect is a serious chance, posting him on the second line of early betting.
Kah rode Sirius Suspect to victory at his last two runs, including his Group 3 Standish Handicap win, and has stuck with the seven-year-old in the Newmarket Handicap.
“It gives me good confidence that someone of the calibre of Jamie Kah has decided to ride him,” Hasan said.

Sirius Suspect completed his preparation with an impressive jumpout down the Flemington straight last Friday. Hasan said Sirius Suspect’s condition won’t be the reason for defeat on Saturday.
“We gave him a good, solid hit-out over the last 400(m). It was all about doing his best work eight days out from the race,” Hasan said.
“That’s how I’ve always trained him so having access to the Flemington straight eight days before the Newmarket was perfect for us.
“A lot of work has gone into this horse and we’ve got him exactly where we want him. I can’t have him any better.”
Class will be the query hovering over Sirius Suspect’s chances in the Newmarket but Hasan said the son of the 2010 Newmarket winner Wanted deserves his shot at the highest level.
“The horse just keeps doing a mighty job for the stable,” Hasan said.
“It’s not about the money, it’s just the horse deserves to have a crack at a big race. He’s never had a chance to win a Group 1 race but we keep raising the bar and he just keeps getting better.
“Can he win a Newmarket? I don’t know. We’ll find out on Saturday.”
