Ben Pauling-trained Global Citizen faces the daunting task of taking on dual Champion Hurdler Buveur d’Air in Kempton’s Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day after winning the Gerry Feilden Hurdle at Newbury early this month.

Global Citizen won the Grade Two Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle at Kempton in February.

Pauling said: ‘With that display at Newbury, he’s worthy of his place in the race.

‘We know he loves the track. I only kept him over hurdles this year because I believed he could be near top class.

‘If he comes second to Buveur d’Air a couple of times, that’s no disgrace.’ 

Jason Watson, whose impressive and rapid rise through the ranks saw him crowned champion Flat apprentice this year, has been appointed stable jockey to the Roger Charlton stable for next year. Brighton-born Watson, 18, has never previously ridden for Charlton.
