The $2 million Victoria Derby headlines one of Australia’s greatest racedays at Flemington on Saturday.

The meeting also provides a last chance for several Melbourne Cup hopefuls to force their way into the 3200m staying classic on Tuesday.

The nine-race card, which officially kicks-off the Melbourne Cup Carnival, features four Group 1 races – the Derby, Coolmore Stud Stakes, Kennedy Mile and Empire Rose Stakes – as well as two Group 2s and three Group 3 events.

Gai Waterhouse’s star colt Thinkin’ Big is the dominant favourite for the Derby.

The trainer also has Northwest Passage among a host of stayers pushing for a golden ticket into the Melbourne Cup via the Lexus Stakes.

A cracking crop of sprinting three-year-olds will be out to bolster their value with a victory in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, while Epsom Handicap winner Hartnell heads the field in the Kennedy Mile.

Thousand Guineas winner Amphitrite will be shooting for her fifth straight win this campaign in the Empire Rose Stakes.So strap yourselves in, it’s going to be a cracking day of racing.
