Blaze A Trail out to show his Group 1 Queensland Derby credentials
Trainer Matt Vella has visions of Blaze A Trail tackling a Group 1 later this year and he’s hoping the promising colt can take a giant step in that direction at Rosehill this weekend.
Vella believes Blaze A Trail can be a Queensland Derby contender but knows the three-year-old has some boxes to tick before then, starting with Saturday’s Ranvet Benchmark 72 Handicap (1300m).
“Honestly I think if he can run the trip he would be good for the Queensland Derby,” Vella said.
“I thought he could be a Spring Champion horse in the spring before we tipped him out so he should be capable of measuring up to stakes grade up in Queensland.
“He has to show me he is up to running in that grade over his next couple of runs.”
Blaze A Trail started life with Peter and Paul Snowden, finishing third in the $1 million Golden Gift on debut.
The colt, which is owned by Sir Owen Glenn, struggled in two lead up runs for the Golden Slipper and was subsequently sent to Vella’s Hawkesbury yard.

The son of Criterion has impressed since making the move and put together back-to-back provincial wins before he was sent for a spell with the vision of targeting higher honours in 2021.
“I think he has improved off last preparation,” Vella said.
“He is more mentally sound. He’s bigger and stronger than he was during the spring.
“His trials have been good to him.”
Vella has given Blaze A Trail a pair of trials in preparation for his return, which had to be delayed a week because of Sydney’s wet tracks.
The 1300m assignment on the weekend will likely be short of his best but Vella expects Blaze A Trail can still be competitive.
“In a beautiful world we want him to win but he is going to be getting up over 2000m eventually,” Vella said.
“It is a good Saturday grade race for him and he should run well.
“As long as he is hitting the line strong, and isn’t getting beaten to far.”
Blaze A Trail is a $9 chance with TAB.com.au to score on his return with Rachel King booked for the ride.
