Phil Mickelson happy to play the underdog in match vs. Tiger Woods

Phil Mickelson sees a silver, if not a golden, lining in the role as heavy underdog in his upcoming pay-per-view match against Tiger Woods.

Las Vegas oddsmakers have installed Mickelson at +180 against Woods in their $9 million match set for Nov. 23. A $100 bet on Mickelson would net $180 if he wins.

Mickelson is optimistic about a potential windfall with those numbers.

"I like it, the payoff on my side is very good, I like it," Mickelson told NBC San Diego Monday.

Woods, 42, is the favorite at -220. One would have to wager $220 to net $100 on a Woods' victory.

The 48-year-old Mickelson said he continues to prepare for the match. He last played at the Safeway Open and finished T17.

"We've got three weeks, I'm working in the gym right now, then in about four days I'll get back on the golf course," Mickelson said. "I'm excited to get back on the course at Shadow Creek and play Tiger, it's a fun event. It's been great for me this off season, because it's kept me working on my game even though I'm not playing in tournaments, I've had to get my club speed up and just work on the right things, hopefully this will help not only in the match, but for a great 2019 season."

Mickelson spoke in conjunction with his participation in the Freedom to Live charity golf tournament in San Diego. He also offered a clinic to attendees.
