Retired David Haye set for boxing return at 40 ‘in September fight with pal’

David Haye is reportedly set to return to boxing for an eight-round bout against Joe Fournier – who is one of the former world heavyweight champion's close friends.

Haye officially hung up his gloves in 2018 after suffering back-to-back defeats against bitter rival Tony Bellew, with a series of injury problems taking their toll on him at the back end of his career.

In the time since he has kept himself occupied on the other side of the ropes as a manager and promoter, most notably stewarding former opponent Derek Chisora's career from October 2018 up until July of this year.

But according to ESPN, the 40-year-old is plotting a shock boxing comeback for a clash with pal Fournier on September 11.

The pair have been good friends for a number of years, regularly sharing photos of their nights out together on social media.

Fournier has also fought on several cards promoted by Haye after signing with Hayemaker Promotions in 2016.

His record so far is impressive, with the entrepreneur unbeaten in ten fights.

What do you make of David Haye's plans to return to the ring? Let us know in the comments section.

He returned to the ring after five years away in April under Triller's 'Fight club' banner, where he knocked out musician Reykon on the undercard of Jake Paul's fight with Ben Askren.

Afterwards Fournier called out the controversial YouTuber, leading Haye to try and organise a fight for the nightclub tycoon against Paul, although that didn't come to fruition.

Even so, it comes as something of a surprise that Haye wants to step back into the ring against his close pal – three years since his most recent professional bout.

Headlining the evening is former six-weight world champion Oscar de la Hoya.

The Golden Boy retired 13 years ago after a series of losses towards the end of his career, culminating in a one-side beating by Manny Pacquiao, who himself is due to fight Yordenis Ugas later this month.

De la Hoya takes on former UFC champion Vitor Belfort, 44, at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles on September 11.
