Miller vs. Dinu results, live updates and round-by-round coverage

MULVANE, Kan. — The second event of Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing USA is headlined by Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller squaring off against Bogdan Dinu live from the Kansas Star Arena and Casino.

In the co-main event, unified women’s middleweight champion Claressa Shields defends her IBF and WBA championships against Hannah Rankin. The vacant WBC title is also on the line in that bout.

Miller (22-0, 19 KOs) makes a quick turnaround from blowing out Tomasz Adamek by second-round knockout on Oct. 6 in Chicago. It had appeared that Miller would be fighting Fres Oquendo on this Kansas show, but Oquendo had concerns with regards to VADA testing and didn’t accept the fight.

Before accepting the biggest fight of his career, Dinu (18-0, 14 KOs) had been set for action on an Oct. 27 card in Bulgaria. This will be Dinu’s first fight in the United States, as he has competed primarily in his native Romania and in Canada.

Sporting News will be ringside providing all the coverage of tonight’s action.

Miller vs. Dinu results

10:15 p.m.: Coming up next at Miller vs. Dinu: Nico Hernandez faces Josue Morales. The reason Eddie Hearn came to Kansas was because of Hernandez (5-0, 4 KOs), who hails from nearby Wichita. Going to be hard for Morales (8-7-3) here to deal with the hometown crowd cheering on their favorite. This looks to be nothing more than a showcase for Hernandez.

Brandon Rios makes a successful return home, stops Ramon Alvarez

9:53 p.m.: Rios def. Alvarez by TKO at 0:38 of the ninth round. The fight changed in the eighth round. Rios got Alvarez to the ropes and near the end of the round, he rocked Alvarez with a straight right hand. Moments later, he connected on a hard right followed by a hard left hand and a right uppercut. Alvarez ate a series of shots before the bell sounded to end the round. Bad job by the referee, as Alvarez was out on his feet and he let it continue. Rios made sure Alvarez didn’t make it out of the ninth, though. Once again, he got Alvarez’s back against the ropes and started teeing off with left and right hands. This time, the referee stepped in and stopped the fight. Great win for Rios. It gets him back on track and with a new team behind him, he could make some noise at welterweight.

9:45 p.m.: Exciting battle through six rounds. Rios is controlling the fight inside, landing the harder shots and making Alvarez a counter puncher. Alvarez isn’t out of this by any means. He needs to keep it on the outside, so he can utilize the jab.

9:28 p.m.: Fun second round. Good back-and-forth action from Rios and Alvarez. Each had their moments in connecting with hard right hands. Alvarez needs to keep himself off the ropes. Rios is picking him apart when he gets him there.

9:20 p.m.: The main card of Miller vs. Danu begins with Brandon Rios taking on Ramon Alvarez in junior middleweight action. Rios (34-4, 25 KOs) looks to get back to what made him the WBA lightweight champion, as he’s lost two of his last three fights. Alvarez (26-6, 16 KOs), the older brother of unified middleweight kingpin Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, has won three consecutive fights. Can Rios get back on track or does Alvarez continue his momentum?
