Mateo Kovacic’s permanent deal at Chelsea is reportedly hanging in the balance with Blues manager Maurizio Sarri edging closer to joining Juventus.

Chelsea are able to sign the Real Madrid loanee despite submitting a formal appeal against FIFA’s transfer ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) as his loan spell at Stamford Bridge last season means he is registered at the club.

However, the Premier League outfit are reconsidering whether to sign him permanently with Sarri set to move to the Serie A champions, according to The Evening Standard.

The Blues will have to sign the midfielder before his season-long loan deal at the west London club expires on June 30.

Kovacic made 51 appearances for Chelsea last season but he failed to find the net and contributed just two assists.

The London club is fighting a punishment imposed by world football’s governing body after being found guilty of offences in signing overseas players under the age of 16.

FIFA fined Chelsea £475,000 in February and issued a ban on registering any new players for the next two transfer windows.
