Lewis Hamilton wants Fernando Alonso to join Red Bull leaving Max Verstappen stunned

Hamilton and Verstappen were locked in an intense battle for the top of the podium at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Verstappen led for most of the race, but Mercedes caught Red Bull napping on lap 50 by bringing in Hamilton for a fresh set of medium tyres.

The Dutch driver was powerless as the five-time world champion soon closed the gap before sweeping past his rival with three laps remaining.

The latest masterclass victory from Hamilton – his eighth of the season – helped increase his lead at the top of the driver standings to an incredible 62 points going into the summer break.

It was also another fascinating Grand Prix which kept fans on the edge of their seat as Hamilton an Verstappen locked horns.

One person in particular who enjoyed the spectacle at the Hungarian Grand Prix was Alonso, who tweeted his admiration for the two fighting it out at the front of the grid.

He tweeted: “Bravo @LewisHamilton and @Max33Verstappen!! Pushing 70 laps to the maximum. More than 1 minute to the 3rd , nearly +1lap and a half to the top 5. Both Impressive. Thanks for the show.”

There has been plenty of speculation throughout the year about Alonso returning to F1 in the near future.

Both Hamilton and Verstappen were asked for their thoughts on seeing the 38-year-old make a comeback to the sport.

Hamilton doesn’t want to see the two-time F1 world champion drive for a team incapable of challenging at the front of the grid.

But the Briton instead took a shot at Pierre Gasly by suggesting Alonso would be best suited to teaming up with Verstappen at Red Bull.

Below is how the exchange went:

Hamilton: This sport needs the best drivers in the best seats, you know. And there’s still at least a seat available that’s good enough for winning, and he’s good enough for winning so it wouldn’t be such a bad thing…

Verstappen: Maybe he can speak to Toto [laughs]?

Hamilton: Well, Valtteri’s great, Valtteri’s been winning. You’re the one with the extra seat, I would say [smiles]…

Verstappen: Alright, I didn’t say that [smiles].
