MLB hot stove: Bryce Harper’s agent indicates Yankees could be bluffing
Bryce Harper’s agent Scott Boras isn’t buying into the speculation that the Yankees aren’t interested in the All-Star outfielder.
Boras said Wednesday at the winter meetings that he has no concern over New York general manager Brian Cashman’s comments from earlier this week as Cashman indicated Harper wasn’t on the Yankees’ radar and that the 26-year-old isn’t a good fit for the team.
“I’ve never heard the Yankees say that,” Boras said (via the New York Post). “It might be that they say things to you. I wasn’t there.
“As far as the Yankees and what discussions I, Hal [Steinbrenner] and Cash have had, I will leave that to our own,” he added. “And I will only let you know that when you’re talking about star players, and I go back to Mark Teixeira. Mark Teixeira with the Yankees.”
The Yankees initially interested in signing Teixeira, either, but they eventually signed the Boras client to an eight-year, $180 million contract during the 2008-09 offseason.
Cashman, however, rejected the comparison and indicated this situation is different because the Yankees had a vacancy at first base at the time of signing Teixeira, the Post notes.
“The Yankees are very adept. They’re smart,” Boras said. “They are going to do something, and I think they can earnestly tell you that right now they’re not doing it and have every intention of doing something else when it’s best for them to do it.”
Cashman responded to Boras’ comments late Wednesday and when asked if he sticks to his original comments, Cashman said, “Yeah. You get the kinder and gentler Brian today.”

MLB hot stove: Nationals sound like they’ve moved on from Bryce Harper
“I kind of try to promote that we are an aggressive, open-minded operation,” Cashman said. “That every day is different. That we are prepared to pivot and react at any moment if things change, if the rosters adjust. If something doesn’t make sense today, it doesn’t mean it won’t make sense tomorrow.
“All I can keep telling you is you know where my current focuses are, but at the same time, we’re a fully operational Death Star.”
