DAZN’s inside look at Joshua-Ruiz highlights Ruiz’s confidence before ‘upset of the era’

It has been 10 days since Andy Ruiz Jr.’s stunning upset of Anthony Joshua at Madison Square Garden to become the first Mexican heavyweight champion in boxing history.

Looking back, there were signs of Ruiz’s quiet confidence and Joshua feeling the pressure of making his U.S. debut entering the fight. And DAZN’s new “About: The story behind the upset of the era,” which is executive produced by award-winning recording artist Meek Mill, rolls out behind-the-scenes footage that shows just that.

As the show begins, Ruiz is seen holding court with reporters in a media roundtable. He mentions how being doubted isn’t foreign to him, while making sure to let everyone know that betting on the underdog in this fight is the right and only move.

“In my situation, there has always been a lot of doubters, so the main thing is just to shut them up,” Ruiz said. “I came a long way – this chubby kid coming from a small little town – but all the people that are betting on me, they’re going to make a lot of, lot of money if we pull it off.”

Meanwhile, the behind-the-scenes footage also shows Joshua admitting to the pressures of making his U.S. debut and defending his unified world heavyweight championship, while eyeing a clash with WBC titleholder Deontay Wilder in the near future.

“Massive,” Joshua told reporters during his own media roundtable access about the pressure he feels entering the fight with Ruiz.

“I just want to box, but all the other stuff that comes with it puts pressure,” he continued. “The reality of life is you win some, you lose some, you keep on going.”

As if those words were haunting enough, especially in hindsight, Joshua spoke about transitioning from preparing for a trash-talking Jarrell Miller to a quiet, respectable Ruiz, and said something even more chilling.

“The ones who smile at you are the ones who come try to take your head off,” Joshua said.

Four knockdowns of Joshua and a shocking seventh-round TKO later, cementing Ruiz’s win, and AJ’s words were proven correct.

“About: The story behind the upset of the era” is a 27-minute length feature showing behind-the-scenes moments of fight week and the aftermath. It can be streamed exclusively on DAZN. The show is an extension of the “40 Days: Joshua-Ruiz” series, which featured the buildup to the fight, and was also executive-produced by Meek Mill.

Jamie Horowitz, DAZN executive vice president of content, said of the show: “‘About: The story behind the upset of the era’ is a show that reminds us why boxing is endlessly compelling. As Benjamin Bratt says one minute in – ‘Once a ring is made, anything can happen.'”
