Steve Smith was completing a run when on 26, Jonny Bairstow spotted the chance for mischief.

The wicketkeeper moved to knock the bails with his gloves, forcing Smith to dive to make his ground when there was no need.

The ball had gone to the other end and Jofra Archer had it in his hands.

Smith saw the funny side, smiling at Bairstow as he dusted himself down before making another 54 runs. 

According to Law 41.5, which deals with ‘deliberate distraction, deception or obstruction of a batsman’, England should have been given a five-run penalty for Bairstow’s actions but the umpires did not enforce this.

Smith finished on 80 on day two at the Oval as he was caught LBW by Chris Woakes.

And it was only the third time in the series that the world’s No 1 batsman has scored less than a century.
